Nicandro et Fileno, deux amis avancés en âge, conviennent, pour agrémenter leurs vieux jours, d’épouser chacun la fille de l’autre: Filli à Fileno et Clori à Nicandro. Mais, invoquant divers prétextes, ces jeunes personnes, comme on peut s’en douter, refusent de faire la volonté de leurs pères, sans compter qu’elles aiment toutes deux Lidio, un séducteur volage qui s’amourache de toutes les bergères alentour. Eurillo, d’autre part, se meurt d’amour pour Filli, qui, on l’a dit, n’a d’yeux que pour Lidio. Il cherche alors à se venger de celui qui lui dérobe l’objet de sa passion. S’ensuivent les chassés-croisés habituels, avant que Nicandro et Fileno, comprenant enfin que leur idée n’était que folie, se résignent au sort que leur impose le grand âge, tandis que Filli s’unit à Lidio et qu’Eurillo reporte son amour sur Clori. E tutto è bene quel che finisce bene!

Nicandro and Fileno, two old friends both stricken in years and seeking a last chance at happiness, propose that each marries the other’s daughter; that Nicandro’s daughter Filli marry Fileno, and Fileno’s daughter Clori marry Nicandro. The girls, however, make several excuses to refuse their fathers’ wishes, for both are in love with Lidio, a fickle and frivolous lover who chases after all the shepherdesses. Eurillo, on the other hand, is dying of love for Filli. She rejects his advances, preferring Lidio. Eurillo swears revenge against the man who has robbed him of his love. After the usual mix-ups, Nicandro and Fileno finally realize that their plan was just a fantasy, and that they will have to settle for the lot imposed by advanced age. Filli, meanwhile, marries Lidio, and Eurillo transfers his love to Clori. E tutto è bene quel che finisce bene!
