Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson

Five years after her early death, the American mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is celebrated here in a two-CD tribute compilation of the baroque repertoire at which she excelled: Purcell, Handel and Bach. Handel's popular "Angels, ever bright and fair" from Theodora and "Scherza infida" from Ariodante remind us of her musical intelligence and vitality. The second disc displays her in less well-known Handel arias, from Susanna and Clori, Tirsi e Fileno. The final tracks on each disc, Dido's Lament and "Bist du bei mir" from the Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach, are almost unbearably moving in their characteristic simplicity and intensity. She is much missed.
