David Josefowitz, who has died aged 96, was a chemist, conductor, entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded a controversial mail-order record company, set up the London Soloists Chamber Orchestra, paid for a recital hall at the Royal Academy of Music and established an art foundation... David Josefowitz was born in Kharkov, in Ukraine, on December 25 1918, the second of five children. His father, Zachar, sold chemicals and dyes to the Communist regime in Russia; his mother, Frieda, a midwife, was descended from a long rabbinical line. As StalinТs terrors increased, Zachar moved the family to Berlin, where David took violin lessons. With the rise of National Socialism the family moved on to Lausanne, in Switzerland, where he was educated at the Ecole Nouvelle http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/11542375/David-Josefowitz-music-entrepreneur-obituary.html
