David Josefowitz was born in Kharkov, in Ukraine, on December 25 1918, the second of five children. His father, Zachar, sold chemicals and dyes to the Communist regime in Russia; his mother, Frieda, a midwife, was descended from a long rabbinical line. As StalinТs terrors increased, Zachar moved the family to Berlin, where David took violin lessons. With the rise of National Socialism the family moved on to Lausanne, in Switzerland, where he was educated at the Ecole Nouvelle
