Composed in 1935-1936, Carmina Burana, Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris cantatade comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magics was first performed in Frankfurt-am Main, conducted by Bertil Wetzelsberger, on 8 June 1937. That was a decisive period for the Third Reich, of which Carl Orff was one of the official musicians. His part in the spectacular organisation of the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 speaks for itself. Carmina Burana is a fascinating, austere and enshanting work, whose forcefulness resides in the music as well as in the declamation and the rhytm. It was the composer's firs great success on a worldwide scale. "Carmina Burana is the start of my complete works", he declared.
