Gérard Pesson est né en 1958 à Torteron (Cher). Après des études de Lettres et de Musicologie à la Sorbonne, puis au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, il fonde en 1986 la revue de musique contemporaine Entretemps. Il est pensionnaire de l’Académie de France à Rome (Villa Médicis) de 1990 à 1992. Lauréat du Studium International de composition de Toulouse (1986), de Opéra Autrement (1989), de la Tribune Internationale de l’Unesco (1994), il obtient en 1996 le prix de la Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco.
Ses œuvres ont été jouées par de nombreux ensembles et orchestres en Europe : l'Ensemble Fa, l'Ensemble 2e2m, l'Ensemble intercontemporain, Itinéraire, l’Ensemble Modern, le Klangforum Wien, l’Ensemble Recherche, l’Ensemble Ictus, Alter Ego, Accroche Note, Erwartung, l’Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre national d'Île-de-France, l’Orchestre Symphonique de la Radio Bavaroise.
Son opéra Forever Valley, commande de T&M, sur un livret de Marie Redonnet, a été créé en avril 2000 au Théâtre des Amandiers à Nanterre. Il a publié en 2004 aux Éditions Van Dieren son journal Cran d’arrêt du beau temps. Son opéra Pastorale, d’après L’Astrée d’Honoré d’Urfé, commande de l’Opéra de Stuttgart a été créé en version de concert en mai 2006 (création scénique juin 2009, au Théâtre du Châtelet à Paris). Son concerto, Future is a faded song, est créé en 2012 par Alexandre Tharaud et l’Orchestre de Zurich sous la direction de Pierre-André Valade.
Ses œuvres sont publiées aux Éditions Henry Lemoine depuis 2000, et par la Maison ONA depuis 2014. Un premier disque monographique, interprété par l’ensemble Fa, est paru en 1996 chez Accord/Una corda. Mes béatitudes, ensemble d’œuvres paru chez æon en 2001 et interprété par l’Ensemble Recherche, a été récompensé par l’Académie Charles Cros. Un enregistrement de l’opéra Forever Valley a été publié en 2003 chez assai. Gérard Pesson a reçu le Prix musique de l’Akademie der Künste de Berlin en mars 2007. Il est professeur de composition au Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris depuis 2006.
En juin 2018, il est artiste invité au festival et académie de l'Ircam, ManiFeste, pour l'interprétation de cinq de ses pièces par Marion Tassou (soprano) et l'Instant Donné.

Очень краткое — всего три страницы — сочинение 1992 года «Non sapremo mai di questo mi», представляющее не столько вариации, сколько тонкий художественный анализ темы из моцартовского Квинтета, К. 516, дает, тем не менее, исчерпывающее представление о стиле Пессона. Композитора увлекает ценность звука как такового, со всеми его, почти неразличимыми, хрупкими нюансами. Он разрабатывает здесь микроскопическую, местами парадоксальную вселенную, где каждый звук, с видимым усилием рожденный из тишины, постоянно готов вновь исчезнуть, а музыкальная ткань настолько тонка и одновременно, что готова тотчас порваться или свернуться. «Non sapremo mai di questo mi» — это отблеск, бросаемый моцартовским текстом на многократно искривленную поверхность с разными коэффициентами отражения, сохраняющий, однако, внутренний свет, исходящий от маленькой девятитактной моцартовской темы.
