Born in Lancashire in 1943, Paul Reade studied piano and composition at the Royal Academy of Music, then joined the music staff of the Coliseum (English National Opera) as a répétiteur. He left in the early 1970s to develop his career as a composer.
He wrote many scores for television, including A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Tom's Midnight Garden and the music for The Victorian Kitchen Garden, for which he won the Ivor Novello Award, and the popular signature tune for The Antiques Roadshow. He also composed for animations including Ludwig, The Flumps, Crystal Tipps & Alistair, as well as Alphabet Castle and Mortimer & Arabel. He wrote over 80 songs and the famous title music for Play School. His dramatic works include the children's opera, David and Goliath, the score for the RSC's production of The Art of Success, and the cantatas The Journey of the Winds and . Reade's works for orchestra include his Flute Concerto, the song cycles Chants du Roussillon and A Sea Voyage, and for narrator and orchestra The Midas Touch, Cinderella and Aesop's Fables. His choral works include Seascapes and Songs of Oisin, and his chamber pieces include the oboe trio Luckbarrow Dances, Aspects of a Landscape for solo oboe, his Saxophone Quartet and the harp trio Dance Preludes.
Reade first collaborated with David Bintley on Hobson's Choice (1989; Dance & Dancers Best New Score; CD: ASV) and again on Far from the Madding Crowd (1996; CD: Black Box). Reade's other ballet scores are Byron (broadcast on BBC Radio 3), the ballet version of his opus 1, Overture to a City (also broadcast on BBC radio) and the one-act ballets Cinderella (National Youth Ballet, 1993; CD: ASV) and The Match Girl and the Flame.
When Paul Reade died in 1997, just 54, he was completing his Bassoon Concerto.
Как я поняла - Рид пасал много для телевидения, оперы для детей, балеты, а так же концерты для флейты, гобоя, фагота.
